Sennacherib Threatens Jerusalem^(A)

36 In the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah’s^(B) reign, Sennacherib^(C) king of Assyria attacked all the fortified cities of Judah and captured them.^(D)

⁹ Now Sennacherib^(A) received a report^(B) that Tirhakah, the king of Cush,^[a](C) was marching out to fight against him. When he heard it, he sent messengers to Hezekiah with this word:

¹⁷ Give ear, Lord, and hear;^(A) open your eyes, Lord, and see;^(B) listen to all the words Sennacherib^(C) has sent to ridicule^(D) the living God.^(E)

³⁷ So Sennacherib^(A) king of Assyria broke camp and withdrew. He returned to Nineveh^(B) and stayed there.
